Assessing Ritual Efficacy in the Egyptian Magical Papyri

In the ancient Egyptian magical papyri we find multiple references concerning the efficacy of individual ritual instructions. The common expression is a simple “very good” at the end. But in the London-Leiden magical papyrus (PDM XIV / PGM XIV) the author compares several lamp divinations within his own scroll with each other:

“I say to this that this vessel inquiry of the lamp is more beautiful than the first one.”

Ancient Egyptian-Demotic is read from the right to the left.
