“Solomon’s seal has annyhilated you” – A Bronze Amulet with Christian, Jewish, Egyptian, and Greek elements

Material: Bronze
Date: 6th century A.D.(?)
Dimensions: 5.8 x 4.5 cm
Findspot: unknown
Current Location: British Museum, London, 1938,1010.1

This bronze amulet was made to protect its owner against enemies and a specific evil demon. Its iconography and inscriptions combine Christian, Jewish, Egyptian, and Greek elements. Side A (left) is inscribed with New Testament narrative imagery and two Greek invocations. Side B (right) contains Egyptian, Jewish and eventually Christian iconography and the invocation of the two Christians Sisinnos and Bi-Sisinnos together with Solomon and four archangels.

It is debated if the artefact we see here is actually ancient or if it is rather a modern copy of an ancient amulet. There is also different information published concerning the material: bronze or copper. The iconography and its composition as well as the magic signs are clearly ancient, which is why I chose to show you this artefact.

Take a look at my video here on my blog for an explanation of the iconography, its origin and meaning,: https://www.antikemagie.com/amulet-for-protection-against-enemies/
